There’s nothing like experiencing a sporting event in person
and The Grand National is at the top of many people’s lists. You don’t have to
know your fillies from a furlong, The National attracts both experienced
racegoers and those on their annual visit looking to soak up the atmosphere and
have a great day out.
So, what exactly makes The Grand National so special? In the
1800’s this iconic race was known as The Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, horses
had to jump over a stone wall, cross a stretch of ploughed land and finish over
two hurdles. For the first four years it was a simple weight-for-age race but
in 1843 Edward William Topham was responsible for turning the Grand National
into what we know as a handicap race.
It’s this handicap system, which makes The Grand National so
exciting. It’s hard to predict winners and that’s why over the years we seen 13
outsiders storming home to win.
