Six Fascinating Facts About The Blackpool Illuminations

Known as the greatest free light show on earth, the Blackpool Illuminations are an annual event that light up the town of Blackpool from the end of August until November, for a total of 66 days.

This spectacular show is known worldwide and welcomes an impressive number of visitors each year.

1. The Blackpool Illuminations are 140 years old

The lights were first switched on in 1879 and have increased in popularity over the years.

 

2. The switch on has seen several famous faces

This year the lights were switched on by Coronation star, Lucy Fallon. In the past, the lights have been turned on by Busted, Diversity, Becky Hill, Kermit the Frog and even a race horse called Red Rum.

 

 

3. The Illuminations are a major tourist attraction drawing in around 3.5 million visitors each year

The influx of visitors usually spend over £275 million whilst visiting Blackpool during the illuminations.

 

4. When the Illuminations were first switched on they consisted of just eight lamps, today the display uses over a millions bulbs

 

 

 

5. The display stretches for around six miles, from Starr Gate to Bispham

 

6. It takes around 65,000 staff hours to get everything ready

Each year a dedicated team of artists, engineers, electricians, painters, joiners and mechanics work hard to ensure everything is ready in time, and then dismantle it afterwords.
